Having and Being. creativity or consumerism

I’ve been re-reading Erich Fromm’s book ‘To Have or to Be’ and it strikes me how ahead of his time he was; and what little difference such an excellent book made.
Shortened Examples 1,. Theoretical considerations demonstrate that radical hedonism (and surely contemporary society is so shallow that Consumerism is now the functional religion) cannot lead to happiness … lonely, anxious, depressed, destructive, dependent people who are glad when we have killed the time we try so hard to save.
2. The character traits engendered by our socio-economic system are pathogenic, and eventually produce a sick person, and thus a sick society.
The clearly pathogenic nature of Consumer society has failed to become conscious, so ecological disasters appear to be the Earth’s only means of removing the disease. I would have thought contraceptives and consciousness were a much more civilised route.

I love consumer goods..the sound of the cash drawer opening and closing. Music to my ears. The populace must buy, buy, buy!! Our life purpose is to reward ourselves with wonderful trinkets and fab SUV's. Spending is good…greed is good! A person cannot live in the world of today without buying something. Everyone must have money! So spend it! And please spend it at the many retail outlets in which I have an 80% share holding.
